Image above taken from this Deviantart page to show us what Gotenks might look like as a Super Saiyan 4.
Gotenks is one of the goofiest characters in Dragon Ball. But there’s no denying how damn powerful he was, and for a while, he was the only one of could stand up to Majin Buu.
Gotenks surprised everyone by turning Super Saiyan 3, a feat that we thought only Goku was capable of, but can Gotenks go SSJ4?
Gotenks can’t go SSJ4. SSJ4 is not official canon either, so it’d have to be written into the show for Gotenks to become it then, but theoretically, Gotenks could become SSJ4 one day.Click here to take our Dragon Ball Z quiz!!!
Who is Gotenks?
Gotenks is the combination of Half-Saiyans Goten and Trunks when they fuse using the Fusion Dance technique.
The technique is demonstrated to them by Goku and Piccolo during the Majin Buu Saga.
They are taught the technique as it’s thought that the only way to defeat Majin Buu was for the 2 Saiyans to fuse.
After a lot of practice and several bad fuses, they eventually perfect the technique and are seen using it several times, most recently in the Battle of Gods movie.
Goten and Trunks were already mighty warriors in their own right. Although they weren’t as powerful as Vegeta or Goku, they were capable of going Super Saiyan 1.
But when they combined, they had so much power that they could skip SSJ2 and go straight to SSJ3.
So Gotenks is definitely powerful enough to become Super Saiyan 4.
SSJ4 isn’t canon
The biggest stumbling block to Gotenks becoming Super Saiyan 4 is that SSJ4 doesn’t exist.
At least in the official Dragon Ball Universe, Super Saiyan 4 doesn’t exist.
SSJ4 is a creation from Dragon Ball GT, which officially lost its canon status with Dragon Ball Super, although some fans never considered it canon.
However, since it uses a different transformation path to Super Saiyan God, it could still fit into the world of Dragon Ball Super.
SSJ4 requires tails – Goten and Trunks don’t have Tails
Another potential issue with Gotenks becoming Super Saiyan is that neither of the Half-Saiyans have tails.
Even though Goku and Vegeta lost their tails, they were able to have them grown back to become SSJ4. But it’s not clear whether Goten and Trunks can have tails grown if they never had them in the first place.
It’s also unclear whether they can even transform into an Oozaru without natural tails. It would certainly be interesting to see how the writers would overcome that limitation.
Hopefully, it’s something more interesting than just the Dragon Ball solving all the problems.
SSJ4 Gotenks – Final Thoughts
Even though the majority of fans hated Dragon Ball GT, one of the few salvage components of the show was the SSJ4 transformation.
I also found it really cool how they incorporated the Oozaru form into something powerful and relevant, and it totally made logical sense that combining Oozaru and Super Saiyan would create an awesome new transformation.
Gotenks general horseplay as SSJ4 would be fun to watch, and no doubt they’d be entertained with their cool red fur and even crazier hairstyle.
